Graeme Martin was born in Western Australia and grew up on a farm. At the University of WA, he gained a BSc in Agricultural Science (Hons I) and a PhD. He then spent 2 years in France (INRA, Tours) and 3 years in the UK (MRC, Edinburgh) before returning to a joint position with UWA and CSIRO in 1987. He was promoted to Professor in 2001. He has served as Head of Animal Science, Dean of the Faculty of Natural & Agricultural Sciences, Dean of the Postgraduate School of UWA, and Deputy Chair and Chair of the Academic Board of the University, and is currently Head of the School of Animal Biology and Program Leader (Animal Production Systems) in the UWA Institute of Agriculture.
His research team mostly works on brain function, reproduction and metabolism in sheep, with a particular focus on the pathways through which environmental factors influence the reproductive system. He also has projects on reproduction in emus and marsupials. The team currently includes three post-doctoral fellows and several postgraduate students and international visitors. Over the past 5 years, he has developed and promoted the concept of “clean, green and ethical systems of animal production”, presenting it to over 3000 farmers in industry forums across Australia.
He has won $4.6m research funding from the Australian Research Council, the National Health & Medical Research Council, the Rural Industries Research & Development Corporation, and Meat & Livestock Australia. He has supervised 27 students to completion of postgraduate degrees and published over 280 papers in peer-reviewed, international journals and books.
